Restorations / Herstellingen

Restorations is a monthly reflection of Latter-day spirituality by Bryan Monte, a member of the Community of Christ, living in Zeist, The Netherlands, and Robert Poort, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, living in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Community of Christ is the new name of the former Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Both churches find their origin within the faith tradition of the Restoration.

Herstellingen is een maandelijks bericht over spiritualiteit in het licht van het herstelde evangelie door Robert Poort, een Nederlander woonachtig te Las Vegas in de VS, en lid van de Kerk van Jezus Christus van de Heiligen der Laatste Dagen, en Bryan Monte, een Amerikaan woonachtig te Zeist, en lid van de Gemeenschap van Christus. De Gemeenschap van Christus is de nieuwe naam van de voormalige Gereorganiseerde Kerk van Jezus Christus van de Heiligen der Laatste Dagen. Beide kerkgenootschappen komen voort uit de geloofstraditie van de Herstelling.

LDS initiatives - HLD initiatieven

LDS scripture and prophetic teaching speak out strongly for social justice: for peace, equality, democracy, human rights, and wise stewardship of the earth’s resources. Latter-day Saints are enjoined to “plead the cause of the poor and the needy” (D&C 124:75) and to work towards a society in which “there [are] no poor among [us]” (Moses 7:18). We are challenged to “renounce war and proclaim peace” (D&C 98:16). The Book of Mormon teaches that “there should be an equality among all” (Mosiah 27:3) and calls us to stand against racism, gender inequity, and injustice on the principle that “black and white, bond and free, male and female;...all are alike unto God” (2 Nephi 26:33). The scriptures commend democracy, constitutional law, and human rights (Mosiah 29:26; D&C 98:5; D&C 101:77), while speaking harshly against inequity, exploitation, oppression, and violence (2 Nephi 20:1-2; 3 Nephi 24:5; D&C 38:26; Moses 8:28). Scripture teaches us that we are stewards of the earth and its resources, which should be used “with judgment, not to excess” (D&C 59:20).

Mormoonse schriftuur en profetische vermaningen dringen krachtig aan op sociale rechtvaardigheid, vrede, gelijkheid, democratie, mensenrechten, en zorg voor het milieu. Heiligen der laatste dagen worden aangespoord hun "stem lang en luid (te) verheffen om het welzijn der armen en behoeftigen te bepleiten." (Leer en Verbonden 124:75), en in gerechtigheid te leven zodat ook van ons gezegd mag worden: "er was geen arme onder hen." (Mozes 7:18)
Ons is geboden: "Verwerpt daarom oorlog en verkondigt vrede." (Leer en Verbonden 98:16) Het Boek van Mormon wijst op "een streng gebod in alle gemeenten", "dat er gelijkheid onder alle mensen moest zijn." (Mosiah 27:3), een gelijkheid die volgens Nephi geldt voor allen "hetzij zwarte of blanke, dienstknecht of vrije, man of vrouw." (2 Nephi 26:33)
Er is een duidelijke schriftuurlijke aanbeveling voor democratie, grondrechten en mensenrechten. (Mosiah 29:26, Leer en Verbonden 98:5, 101:77), en een evenduidelijke veroordeling van ongelijkheid, uitbuiting, onderdrukking en geweld. (2 Nephi 20:1-2, 3 Nephi 24:5, Leer en Verbonden 38:26, Mozes 8:28)
Ook de zorg voor het milieu, God's schepping, heeft een schriftuurlijke basis: "want het werd geschapen met het oogmerk om met oordeel te worden gebruikt, niet overmatig." (Leer en Verbonden 59:20)

COC initiatives - GVC initiatieven

We seek to uphold the dignity of people in developing countries, enabling them towards self-reliance.
Our aim is to assist persons to build a better future through education, small businesses and community development.
Outreach Europe started from a private initiative giving support to some small projects in Kenya in 1985.
The number and size of projects increased. More people got involved and making decisions needed to become a shared responsibility. In order to secure continuity of the work Outreach Europe was formally founded as a charitable organization in February 1989.
Since 1985 we have supported projects in south-east Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Kenya.
The emphasis was on Kenya, where 80% of the founds were used.
OE is formally registered within the Netherlands as a not-for-profit organization. It is governed by the administrative board consisting of persons from Germany and the Netherlands. This work is done on a voluntary base. We find it important that the donations reach the people and projects they are intended for. Additionally we  have local representatives who coordinate and closely control the effectiveness of our projects.

Wij streven ernaar de waardigheid van mensen in ontwikkelingslanden te bevestigen door hen in staat te stellen voor zichzelf te zorgen.
Ons doel is mensen een betere toekomst te bieden door onderwijs, kleine zakelijke projecten en ontwikkeling van de kleine gemeenschappen.
Outreach Europe komt uit particulier initiatief voort, in 1985 begonnen met het verlenen van steun aan enkele kleine projecten in Kenia.
Projecten breidden zich in aantal en in omvang uit. Meer mensen raakten in het werk betrokken. Het was niet goed meer om beslissingen over projectaanvragen door één persoon te laten nemen.
Om de continuïteit van het werk veilig te stellen werd in februari 1989 de Stichting OUTREACH EUROPE opgericht.
Sedert 1985 werden projecten in Zuidoost Nigeria, Ivoorkust, Liberia, Congo, Tanzania en Kenia gesteund. De nadruk lag vooral op Kenia, waar ongeveer 90% van de fondsen naartoe ging.
Outreach Europe is in Nederland officieel als stichting geregistreerd. Het stichtingsbestuur bestaat uit personen uit Nederland en Duitsland. Al het werk hier wordt op vrijwillige basis gedaan. Wij vinden het belangrijk, dat giften de mensen en projecten bereiken waarvoor ze gegeven worden. Daarnaast hebben we plaatselijke vertegenwoordigers. Zij bewaken en coördineren de projecten van dichtbij.

Both Community of Christ members as well as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are actively participating in the pursuit of Peace and Justice. Latter-day Saints are mainly involved in humanitarian causes, while members of the Community of Christ have a much more defined approach of social justice, even teach its priciples in their curriculum.
In The Netherlands, because of a different social and political climate than in the US, folks are often very critical when it comes to social justice issues.
A good example is the following YouTube-video of a protestsong sung by Boudewijn de Groot at the time of the Vietnam war, a song that became popular again these days because of the war in Iraq ...

Zowel leden van de Gemeenschap van Christus als leden van de Kerk van Jezus Christus van de Heiligen der Laatste Dagen zijn aktief betrokken in het streven naar Vrede en Gerechtigheid. Heiligen der Laatste Dagen echter zijn hoofdzakelijk betrokken bij humanitaire projecten, terwijl de leden van de Gemeenschap van Christus een veel meer gedefinieerde benadering hebben t.o.v. sociale rechtvaardigheid en dit zelfs in hun kerkelijk lesmateriaal hebben opgenomen.
In Nederland heerst er een heel ander sociaal en politiek klimaat dan in de VS, en men is daarom vaak heel kritisch t.o.v. sociale rechtvaardigheid.
Een goed voorbeeld is de volgende YouTube-video met een protestlied gezongen door Boudewijn de Groot ten tijde van de Vietnam-oorlog, een lied dat momenteel weer populair werd i.v.m. de oorlog in Irak ...
